Obsidian Art Space (OAS) is a nonprofit art space which provides a venue for visual and performing artists as well as arts outreach programs. From its inception in March of 2010, OAS has been an asset to the Historic Heights as well as the Greater Houston arts community. Their response has been overwhelmingly positive and welcoming. Thank you, Houston!

Our goal is to have art happening in the space all day every day and we are well on our way to fulfilling that dream. The space is completely booked for 2012 and is already reserving dates for 2013. If you're considering using the facility, think way ahead!

Upcoming programs:

In the spring of 2011, we launched our children's theatre and in the summer of 2012, we plan to add adult and children’s daytime and evening acting and playwriting classes.

We are very excited about one of our children’s programs which will guide kids 12-17 through writing a five to ten minute play then producing it and seeing their words come to life. We’re planning to host an introduction to theatre class for kids 8-12, too, which will teach basics about theatre and improve their public speaking skills through a short monologue presentation. We’re also working with the YMCA After School Program to develop a Summer Musical Theatre camp for kids 8-15. We offer scholarships for these classes so that any child who truly wants to participate will not be barred by financial constraints.

Our adult classes will focus on basics, audition skills, dialects, character development and stage combat.

Making the space work for art:

Since the Bootown formerly known as Houston Fringe Festival in May of 2010, we have applied for our 501(c)3, been recognized by the State of Texas as a non-profit corporation, purchased versatile risers and chairs, completed dressing room construction, installed central air conditioning, additional bathrooms, a new roof, ADA compliant ramps and rails, and two new interior walls which enclose our performance space and create a black box theatre. Our flexible non-permanent risers and stackable chairs help maintain the space's versatility and accommodate a variety of arts events. OAS is more than just a performance space but as a performance space, we want nothing to limit the imagination.

We have come so far and there’s still so much to do! The most pressing needs at this time are front doors. If you're interested in donating labor, materials or the cost of these items, contact Leighza at (832)- 889-7837.

Please consider donating to Obsidian Art Space and supporting our effort to create community through art. Any amount you can manage will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and for supporting art in Houston!
